American Military Targeted a 'Large Facility' in Venezuela, President Trump Stated Lacking Offering Specifics.

Ex-President Donald Trump has asserted that US forces targeted a "large plant" in the South American country last week. Yet, the former president did not specify the exact nature or location of the target, and officials have issued no further comment from his administration.

Unspecific Comments Made In a Talk Show

"US forces just eliminated – I don't know if you read – they have a major complex, where the ships depart from. Recently, we destroyed it. So we targeted them with significant force," Trump reportedly said to GOP supporter and supermarket owner John Catsimatidis on Friday.

Possible Significance of a Verified Strike

Should a American military action were to be verified, it would constitute the initial attack on Venezuelan soil since the Pentagon initiated a expansion of US military presence in the Caribbean region to interdict drug traffickers that the Trump administration claims operate under the orders of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The stated purpose of the force deployment has since morphed into a blockade aimed at hindering the country's crude oil shipments.

Online Footage and Official Statements

Trump has for some time indicated that US forces are prepared to expand the operations by striking targets within Venezuela, a strategy that would in theory require legislative authorization.

Video footage circulated on social media on 24 December purportedly showed an explosion said to be from an industrial area in Zulia state. However, the video or the facility has not been confirmed by third parties.

An administration official allegedly told a news network that the former president was referring to a drug facility in his comments.

Reaction and Ongoing Military Situation

The Caracas administration has remained silent on the event Trump described. Furthermore, there have been no verified accounts from within the country concerning it.

The presence of American forces in the region – a stance some have called a naval quarantine – marks the broadest naval operation of the Trump era.

Officials have stopped short from describing the operation as a blockade, but have stated that approximately 15,000 troops are positioned across the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, including a carrier strike group, F-35 aircraft, and Coast Guard cutters to enforce current economic sanctions.
